Historical Societies and Museums

    Of the many railroads that built within Augusta County, a few lasted sufficiently in duration, to have Historical Societies or Museums which collect, store, and author materials about them. In sequence, the Augusta County Railroad Museum acknowledges the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society, the Baltimore and Ohio Historical Society, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum, and Norfolk and Western Historical Society. Each of these organizations act as a repositiory of cataloged materials, and regularly publish newsletters, offer railroad specific memorabilia, and aid authors with research access for developing books about their speciality.   The Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society in Clifton Forge Va.  

    Located in Clifton Forge Va., the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society regularly publishes a newletter and mazagine with materials specific to the Chesapeake & Ohio and its railroad subsidiaries. They operate the C&O Railway Heritage Center with an outdoor display of railroad locomotives and rolling stock, indoor displays of artifacts and models, and a gift shop featuring select items. Public visitation of the Heritage Center Mueseum is welcome. A small admission is charged.

    The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum is located immediately west of downtown Baltimore Md. The Museum features a covered roundhouse with locomotives and other equipment inside. Outdoor displays include a very large collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Public visitation of the Museum is welcome. A small admission is charged to visit the Museum.

  The N&W 611 travels from Goshen Va. to Staunton Va.  

    The Virginia Museum of Transportation is located in Roanoke Va. and features exhibits of all forms of transportation, but particular to railroading, is home to a large outdoor display of locomotives and railcars. Public visitation of the Museum is welcome. A small admission is charged to visit the Museum.

    A most recent development was the partenership between the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Virginia Scenic Express. While the 2023 Fall Excursion season is coming to a close, there is great hope that the venture proved successful and shall be repeated. Check again for upcoming news about this unique adventure.

    The Railroad & Locomotive Historical Society archival collection is located in Jacksonville Fl. Founded in 1921, this organization organizes archival information about all North American railroads. Membership since 1921 has included some of the most highly recognized scholars, researchers, and authors of railroad study. The reference section is superb and particularly noteworthy for historical researchers and authors. While the R&LHS does interact with the Public, it does not have materials on exhibition.
