Links to other websites Historical Societies and Museums     Of the many railroads that built within Augusta County, a few lasted sufficiently in duration, to have Historical Societies or Museums which collect, store, and author materials about them. In sequence, the Augusta County Railroad Museum acknowledges the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society, the Baltimore and Ohio Historical Society, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum, and Norfolk and Western Historical Society. Each of these organizations act as a repositiory of cataloged materials, and regularly publish newsletters, offer railroad specific memorabilia, and aid authors with research access for developing books about their speciality. They operate the C&O Railway Heritage Center with an outdoor display of railroad locomotives and rolling stock, indoor displays of artifacts and models, and a gift shop featuring select items. Founded in 1921, this organization organizes archival information about all North American railroads. Membership since 1921 has included some of the most highly recognized scholars, researchers, and authors of railroad study. The reference section is superb and particularly noteworthy for historical researchers and authors. While the R&LHS does interact with the Public, it does not have materials on exhibition.
